Just 300 km north east of Delhi is India's first National Park christened after Jim Corbett, the famous author and naturalist. The park was established in 1935 in a valley of grasslands and "saal" forests against a backdrop of the Himalayas, with the Ramganga river running through it. The park is one of the fnest habitats for the Royal Bengal Tiger, and was the site of the launching of Project Tiger in 1973. Besides the tiger, the park also sports leopard, sloth bear, elephant, hog deer, sambar, chital and numerous other species. Within the waters of the Ramganga river live the "ghariyal" and the march crocodile. The fauna includes the startling grey jungle fowl and the great hornbill.
