Sarnath is where Buddha preached his first sermon after he had attained enlightenment. It is about 10 km from Varanasi. Visit the Bodhi Tree, whose saplings are believed to have been brought from the famous Bodhi Tree at Sri Lanka. Also see the Chaukhandi Stupa where Buddha met his five disciples, and the Statues of Buddha and his Five Disciples. The museum in Sarnath features the Ashok Pillar with its four guardian lions that have been used as independent India's national emblem.
