Seventeen centuries ago, a city named Vijayapuri flourished in this area as a center of Buddhist studies. The city later served as the capital of the Ikshvaku kindom, and, today, the town bears the name Nagarjunasagar, in tribute to Acharya Nagarjuna, the founder of Mahayana Buddhism. The sacred remains of one of the most ancient civilizations in the world are found in this beautiful township.
