A slight distance from the Charminar, this famous mosque's ancient foundation was laid in 1614 by Hyderabad's founder, Sultan Mohammed Qutb Shah, and it was later completed by the Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb. The bricks on top of the central arch are believed to be from the holy city of Mecca, hence the mosque's name. A room in the courtyard is believed to house a treasured relic, the hair of the revered prophet Mohammed. Mecca Masjid is the biggest mosque in Southern India, with the capacity to accommodate 10,000 worshippers at a time.
