In 1309, Pope Clement V shifted the papacy from Rome to Avignon, in his native France. Since then, the papacy has been moved back to Rome, but the glorious relic of the Papal Palace still remains. Today, Avignon plays home to a diverse group of artists and artisans that take over the streets in the wonderful Festival d' Avignon. The rest of the year, Avignon is a cheerful town of cafés, art galleries and fashionable shops. It is also an extraordinary base from which to explore the Rhone Valley and the Vaucluse.
