Chambord,as the largest of the Loire chateaux, covers an area of 32,829 square yards and foreshadows Versailles. The structure, which was completed in 1547, contains 440 rooms, 365 fireplaces, 13 great staircases, and stables to accommodate 1200 horses. The castle was once used as a retreat for French kings.
