Pierre d’Assezat made his fortune with the commerce of Pastel (plant from which was extracted an indigo-coloured dye), and in 1555 contracted Nicolas Bachelier, a well-known architect, to draw up plans for a palatial town-house in the same style as the Louvre’s ‘Square Courtyard’.
