Designed by Charles Garnier for Napoleon III, this sumptuous edifice is best know for its lavishly ornate exterior and elegant interior which houses the famous Grand Staircase made of white carrara marble and the five-tiered auditorium in red velvet and gold. Ballets are most often performed at the Opera. The Opera lies at the center of one of Paris' most active commercial and tourist districts today.
