CompiegneApprox. Time: 6 hours
Activity Level: Easy to Moderate

The town of Compiegne is sixty miles north-east of Paris (45 minutes and approximately $15 by frequent trains). Compi├Ęgne is a beautiful and historic university town of about 20,000, and served as a royal country residence under Louis XV. The largest National Reserve Forest in France is located here, providing a variety of outdoor activities.

The town served as one of France's largest detention center for Jews during World War II, but today, this beautiful city is proud to be the home of the Musee National du Chateau de Compiegne. This large palace is a glorious hodgepodge of Renaissance, Neo-classical, and Second Empire styles. The 19th century emperors can be thanked for the eclectic and original interior of this magnificent palace.
