During the Franco-Prussian War, Lyon's archbishop vowed that if Lyon was spared from attack, he would build a church. When Lyon went through the war unscathed, the Basilique de Notre-Dame-de-Fourviere built. The decorative exterior was designed to be seen from miles around, and every inch of the interior is flamboyantly decorated to display the Lyon's thankfulness for their narrow escape from brutality.
