Corniche is a French word that means a road which is by an ocean, a sea, a river or a lake. In Alexandria there is a very long Corniche which was built by Khedive Ismaïl (one of Egypt's previous rulers) along the Mediterranean Sea. The area remains fortified by a five mile long wall with towers which have protected the city since the 13th Century and takes you right through the city center. The area remains a lively area of Alexandria.
