The pre-Columbian village beginning of Caspana is an oasis 9,500 feet above sea level. The small village consists of a neat cluster of white, thatched-roof mud houses in a fertile valley where the inhabitants cultivate vegetables and beautiful flowers using the terrace-style farming technique typical of the area. The friendly locals gladly share tales of selling their products in Calama as visitors stroll among their streets.
