Before Belo Horizonte, Ouro Preto was the capital of Minas Gerais. This small colonial town has been able to preserve its history quite well. The town only contains 30,000 people and has avoided tall skyscrapers and other architecture of modern cities. Masterpieces by Brazilian artists such as Alejadinho can be found in the Catholic churches. Ouro Preto used to be the wealthiest gold mining center in the world. The name itself means black gold.Courtesy of the Brazil Tourism Board
