Belo Horizonte is the capital of Minas Gerais and is often passed through by travelers going from Rio to Brasilia. It was the first city in Brazil to be planned out precisely. Its population is 2,017,000, and is the third largest city in Brazil. It functions as an important mining area, as well as, the gateway to many of the historical cities of Minas Gerais.
