Flamengo and Leblon

Flamengo beach, which heads south and then west from downtown, is very popular but has an emphasis on soccer rather than swimming. It is a middle class beach in what was once the finest residential district. Leblon is on the far end of the beach in one of Rio’s most desirable districts, which is becoming increasingly upper class as rents continue to rise. This beach is quieter and offers some of the city’s finer restaurants. On Sundays and holidays Leblon is closed to traffic until 6 pm.
