Take the northeast route out of Santiago through the cultivated fields of the Aconcagua Valley. Just beyond the town of Los Andes, travel over a bit of glacial morraine and brace for the final steep ascent—more than two dozen hair-pin turns—to Portillo Hotel. Hidden away in the middle of the Andes, this is the most famous of Chile’s ski resorts. Besides being the site of a number of speed skiing records, Portillo boasts eleven runs and a internationally acclaimed—and internationally staffed—ski school. Lunch (not included) is available at the hotel’s restaurant which looks out on the slopes and Inca Lagoon. Return to Santiago late in the afternoon.
