Evidence of Iquique’s “Golden Age,” which was fueled by Chile’s 19th-century nitrate boom, is apparent with a drive through this coastal city, which is now supported by the fishing industry. Pass the beaches and avenues of the city’s southern section, then continue to the historical quarter. There you will visit Baquedano Avenue, the city’s main thoroughfare distinguished by unique 1900s Georgian/American-style wooden homes and Astoreca Palace, a museum that encompasses the Culture House as well as an interesting marine shell collection. Next, stroll around Plaza Pratt, noticing the ancient trees and soaring palms. Also view the clock tower, which was constructed in 1877, the neo-classic Municipal Theater and the Moorish Centro Español, the stucco and wooden Don Quijote murals. Complete the tour at Ferrocarril Arica-La Paz Station where you will visit the Monument of the Unknown Sailor, a statue built in honor of all those who perished during the War of the Pacific between Chile, Bolivia and Peru, which lasted from 1879 to 1884.
