A small city with its heart centered around the river, Valdivia is an old colonial town somewhat destroyed over the years by various natural disasters yet remains a great stop for a blast of sea air and great seafood. Visit the city's bustling waterfront market, the Mercado Fluvial, and Isla Teja, home to the Museo Historico and some of the area's most breathtaking views, and then view some of the historic defensive towers dating back to 1774. While there, try some of Valdivia's impressive seafood, including congrio and merluza to enormous red spider crabs and other smoked shellfish.
