Travel in Santiago Situated on the foothills of the Andes and divided by the Rio Mapocho, the cosmopolitan capital of Chile has grown to become the fifth largest city in South America. The city was founded in 1541 and became Chile's capital in 1818. The city centers around Avenida Bernardo O’Higgins, named for the liberator of Chile. Museums, art galleries, and theaters abound in this city, home of many renowned Chilean artists such as Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda.
