Known as the archeological capital of Chile, San Pedro de Atacama is located three hours from Calama. Its function over time as an important settlement on a trading route helped San Pedro de Atacama become exceptionally adaptable over time and prosper from its diverse history. Tourist highlights include the village's 17th-century church and the Gustavo Le Paige Archaeological Museum. The Le Paige Museum contains artifacts found by Jesuit father Le Paige, including mummies and stone age tools. In the surrounding area, there are also excavated indian sites and an indian fortress called Pukara QuitorToday this compact oasis town, made up of narrow alleys and adobe buildings, thrives as a tourist center, with plenty of local accommodations, restaurants, dancing and charm.
