Travel in Puerto Montt (Chile) The seaport of Puerto Montt, founded in 1853 on the site of a Mapuche community as part of German colonization, is the southernmost city in Chile’s Central Valley. The capital of the Región de los Lagos (Lake Region), the city is also the southern terminus of the national railroad. The majority of Chileans live in the Central Valley, and much of the nation’s agriculture and industry are concentrated nearby.
