La Serena, Chile's second oldest city, was founded by Juan de Bohon in 1544 and was marred by violence and drama throughout its early history. During that time the city experienced everything from destruction at the hands of the Diaguita Indians in 1546 to raids by English pirates including Sir Francis Drake and Bartholomew Sharp. The 1800s brought more peaceful times as well as a silver boom, and inhabitants were quick to display their wealth. In the 1940s the President of Chile, Gabriela Gonzales Videla, remodeled La Serena in a Spanish colonial style, which made it one of the country's only architecturally harmonious and beautiful cities.
It is now well known for its nearly perfect beaches, this is the place to
go. The beautiful Pacific Ocean waters are the perfect setting for relaxation. This quaint city is one the fastest growing tourist areas of Chile. Fantastic beaches, colonial architecture and famous handicraft markets that feature pottery, and gifts made of Guayacan wood make it a great place to visit.
Close to La Serena are beautiful valleys where the world famous Chilean grapes are grown.
