  Travel in El Calafate

Travel in El Calafate El Calafate was founded in 1927 as a frontier town and is now the jumping-off point for excursions to the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. Sometimes referred to as Lago Argentino, the city is a booming tourist center during the summer season between December and February and a sleepy town of about 3,000 people in the off-season. The city’s one main street is lined with restaurants, chocolate shops, dogs and shops selling t-shirts and souvenirs. The most popular excursions include a trip to Perito Moreno Glacier/Los Glaciares National Park; a motor launch excursion to the Upsala and Onelli Glaciers; El Galpon at Estancia Alice for a complete briefing on sheep farming, a demonstration by sheep dogs and a traditional Argentine "asado." While getting there may take a while, many tourists say the sights of the city make it all worth it.
