The hour-and-a-half drive inland to Cajón del Maipo takes you through vineyards, craft shops, and men on horseback — a forerunner of things to come. White flags line the way, signaling stands and shacks that offer everything from berries and almonds to jars of honey and freshly baked empanadas. Within the valley is the charming city of San Alfonso a stable of fine Chilean horses, a bit shorter and stronger than common English breeds.
Maipo Valley and its many waterfalls is spendid. The gorge of Manzanillo, then up the slope of Campana Hill, takes you to a noted site for observing condors in the spring.
