Pucara de Quitor and Moon Valley

Pucara de Quitor and Moon Valley Approx. Time: 4 hours
Activity Level: Easiest

San Pedro de Atacama is the cradle of the Atacamamena culture, by visiting some of the city’s main attractions including the 17th-century Church of San Pedro and the Gustavo Le Paige Archaeological Museum. Although small, the museum provides a surprisingly thorough overview of the cultural evolution in this region from its world-renowned collection of ancient Indian mummies, and its pottery display that includes a rare set of “tabillas de Rape,” which were supposedly used to inhale hallucinogenic substances. Continue on to Quitor, a 12th-century fort perched on a hill above the San Pedro River, and then the Valley of the Moon, an unusual landscape made up of 90 percent salt and carbonate and exquisitely eroded by water and wind.
