Pass over the Bolivian border, about 40 miles from San Pedro de Atacama, to visit the Green Lagoon, an enchanting, emerald, 10-square-mile body of water. Like an immense green mirror, the lagoon throws off a reflection of Licancábur Volcano, rising almost 19,000 feet above sea level in the background. The magical setting may be the reason why pre-Columbian inhabitants of the territory thought the area was sacred.
